Fc Barca v Espanol (Battle of Barcelona)

FC Barca v Espanyol

FC Barca v Espanyol

A few weeks ago on a Saturday night RCD Espanyol took on Fc Barcelona at Monjuic Stadium in the ¨Battle of Barcelona¨.

Before the game began, the streets in and around the Sants/Montjuic area provided a preview of what was to come at Montjuic Stadium. In the lead up to the game the streets were filled with thousands of Espanyol and Barca supporters making their way to the stadium.

Then tension was already building as both sets of supporters were in full voice singing there cheer songs side by side on the streets. The fans were competing against eachother just as the teams were going to be at the stadium. In between songs they would let off fire crackers and sound horns as they marched through the streets and charged towards Montjuic.

During the game, after Espanyol scored the first goal the players had to be taken off the field and the game put on hold as fans were lighting and firing flares into the stands. A full riot was close to breaking out.

After Barcelona equalised, the game looked to be ending in a draw when the referee awarded a controversial penalty to Barcelona, which Messi took full advantage of and sealed the game for Barcelona.

The events at the game ensure that the next meeting between the two teams, which takes place in February next year, is going to be a game that nobody should miss!!!
