Step back in time with absinthe in Bar Marsella

If you have ever wondered where people went in Barcelona in 1820 for a quiet few, then head to Bar Marsella in the Raval.

It is said to be the first bar in Barcelona and that Picasso, Hemingway, Dalí and Gaudí all drank here.

The decor hasn’t changed much since then (or been cleaned) but who likes bright neon lights with thumping music when you can have absinthe under a never-cleaned light fixture?!

If like me you are too chicken to try the absinthe they do have a fully stocked bar but most people on Friday night seemed to be ordering a glass of absinthe.

The friends I went with informed me that you can’t rely on the place to open on any night at a specific time but surely that only adds to the places mystic! It usually opens around 23.00 so you can head to the many other bars in the area until it opens. Personally we found a great place a few steps away that had formica tables and light shades made from empty petrol containers. I can’t remember the name of it but its on the right as you approach Rambla del Raval.

If you are a girl I recommend you bring a friend with you to the bathroom as they windows are somewhat see-through when the lights are on………. You have been warned!

Bar Marsella makes a great change from the places you may usually go to on a night out in Barcelona.
